Virgin Voyages vs. Royal Caribbean vs. Celebrity: How to Choose the Right Cruise Line

Updated: 6 days ago

When you decide to take an ocean cruise, one of the biggest choices you'll make isn't where you're sailing—it’s who you're sailing with. While ships sail to many of the same tropical ports across the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and beyond, the onboard experience can feel like three completely different vacation worlds.

Three of the most popular cruise lines clients ask me about are Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruises. Each line offers an exceptional vacation, but they cater to very different travel styles, priorities, and demographics.

As a travel advisor and the owner of Journeys by Jacqy, I specialize in matching travelers with the exact ship and sailing style that fits their vibe. Below is my side-by-side breakdown of how Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity stack up so you can choose the right one for your next voyage.

  1. Overall Vibe & Demographic (Adults vs. Families)

  • Virgin Voyages (Sleek, Adults-Only, Hip):

    • The Vibe: Virgin Voyages is strictly 18+ (adults only) with a modern, boutique-hotel aesthetic. Think relaxed luxury meets boutique beach club. There are no buffets, no dress codes, and no cheesy cruise director announcements.

    • Who Sailings Here: Couples, friend groups, solo travelers, and millennials/Gen Xers looking for a vibrant, stylish escape without kids running through the hallways.

  • Royal Caribbean (High-Energy, Multi-Generational, Action-Packed):

    • The Vibe: Royal Caribbean builds massive, record-breaking ships designed as full-blown floating resorts. Energy levels are high, with waterparks, surf simulators, ice-skating rinks, and Broadway-caliber shows.

    • Who Sailings Here: Multi-generational families, parents with young kids or teens, active couples, and big group celebrations where everyone needs something different to do.

  • Celebrity Cruises (Modern Luxury, Relaxed, Refined):

    • The Vibe: Celebrity sits right in the "premium/modern luxury" space. The atmosphere is sophisticated and elevated, featuring stunning modern architecture (like real grass lawns at sea on Solstice-class ships and the Magic Carpet on Edge-class ships) without feeling stuffy.

    • Who Sailings Here: Couples looking for a romantic getaway, empty nesters, adult family groups, and travelers who want a high-end experience with quiet, upscale lounge spaces.

💡 Jacqlyne’s Insider Advice: If you are traveling with kids under 18, Royal Caribbean is your primary choice between these three. Virgin Voyages does not allow passengers under 18, and while Celebrity permits children and has kids' clubs, its onboard environment is heavily tailored toward adults.
  1. Dining Style & Inclusions

  • Virgin Voyages (No Buffets, All Specialty Dining Included):

    • Virgin completely flipped the traditional cruise dining model on its head. There is no main dining room and no traditional buffet. Instead, you have 20+ upscale eateries (from an Korean BBQ grill to an Italian trattoria and a high-end steakhouse)—and all specialty dining is included in your cruise fare.

    • What’s Included: Essential Wi-Fi, essential beverages (drip coffee, water, non-alcoholic sodas, tea), and fitness classes are all bundled into the base fare.

  • Royal Caribbean (Traditional Cruise Dining & Big Specialty Options):

    • Royal Caribbean features classic Main Dining Rooms (with fixed or flexible dining times) alongside an expansive Windjammer buffet. They also offer a large selection of optional specialty restaurants (sushi, Italian, steakhouses) at an extra cover charge.

    • What’s Included: Basic water, iced tea, lemonade, standard coffee, main dining, buffet, and most onboard activities. Soft drinks, alcohol, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and daily gratuities are add-ons.

  • Celebrity Cruises (Culinary Excellence & High-End Specialty Spots):

    • Food is one of Celebrity’s biggest selling points. Their main dining options feel upscale with rotating globally inspired menus, and their specialty dining (like Le Petit Chef 3D animated dining experience or Eden) is top-tier.

    • What’s Included: Traditional cruise inclusions (main dining, buffet, water/tea/coffee). Celebrity also offers "All Included" package options that bundle classic beverage packages and Wi-Fi.

  1. Entertainment, Onboard Activities & Nightlife

  • Virgin Voyages: Swaps traditional cruise theater productions for immersive immersive shows, festival-style performances, pop-up acrobatics, DJ sets, and signature events like the iconic Scarlet Night pool party. You'll also find a onboard tattoo parlor, arcade games, and wellness-focused workout classes.

  • Royal Caribbean: Unmatched for physical activities and mega-entertainment. AquaTheater diving shows, ice-skating spectacles, Broadway musicals (like Grease or Hairspray), zip lines, flowrider surf simulators, and robot bartenders keep every hour filled with action.

  • Celebrity Cruises: Focuses on artistic production shows, live acoustic music, rooftop garden film screenings, silent discos, and stylish martini bars where bartenders perform flair tricks. It's lively and entertaining, but generally wraps up earlier in the evening compared to Virgin or Royal.

  1. Cabins & Staterooms

  • Virgin Voyages: Modern, tech-forward "Sea Terraces" feature smart tablets to control room lights and curtains, convertible transformable beds, and signature red hand-woven hammocks on private balconies.

  • Royal Caribbean: Highly functional and diverse room choices, ranging from budget-friendly Inside Cabins to multi-level Ultimate Family Suites with in-room slides.

  • Celebrity Cruises: Chic, resort-style design with neutral color palettes. Their flagship Edge-class ships feature Infinite Verandahs, where the entire outer wall drops down at the touch of a button to open up your entire living room to the ocean air.
