When you start planning an ocean cruise, picking your room category—whether an Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, or Suite —is only half the battle. Once you decide what type of stateroom you want, you are faced with a much trickier question: Where on the ship should your cabin actually be located?
A cruise ship is essentially a floating resort and luxury hotel combined. With up to 20 decks and thousands of rooms, location is everything. The exact placement of your stateroom can be the difference between waking up to peaceful ocean views or being woken at 5:00 AM by deck chairs scraping across the floor above your bed.

Before opening a cruise ship deck plan, it helps to understand the basic terms used to describe stateroom positioning:
Forward (Front): Located toward the bow of the ship.
Mid-Ship (Middle): Located in the center third of the vessel.
Aft (Back): Located at the rear of the ship.
Deck Level: Lower decks (closer to the waterline), Middle decks, or Upper decks (closer to the pool deck and top venues).
The Best Cabin Locations (Where You Want to Be)
A. For Motion Sickness Sufferers: Mid-Ship, Lower-to-Middle Decks

B. For Quiet & Uninterrupted Sleep: The "Stateroom Sandwich"
Noise is one of the most common complaints on cruise ships. The golden rule for a peaceful room is to create a "Stateroom Sandwich."
The Sweet Spot: Pick a deck that has passenger cabins directly above you AND passenger cabins directly below you. Cabins surrounded by other staterooms act as a natural sound barrier against public venue noise.
C. For Panoramic & Unobstructed Scenery: Aft Balconies
If you love watching the ocean trail behind the ship, Aft-facing balcony cabins offer spectacular, uninterrupted 180-degree wake views.
The Sweet Spot: Located at the very back of the ship, these balconies are often significantly deeper than standard side balconies and offer shelter from the ocean winds you might experience on side or forward decks.

When booking online on your own, it's easy to accidentally select a room that looks great on paper but turns out to be noisy or uncomfortable. Here are the top locations I recommend steering clear of:
❌ Directly Underneath the Lido / Pool Deck
Cabins on the deck directly below the pool deck, buffet, or outdoor fitness areas will subject you to crew members dragging heavy deck chairs across the tile at early morning hours, as well as footsteps overhead all day long.
❌ Above or Below Nightclubs, Theaters, & Promenades
Cabins situated directly over or under high-traffic entertainment venues (like the main theater, night club, bowling alley, or casino) will pick up low-frequency bass vibration late into the night.
❌ Far Forward Cabins (The Bow)
Rooms located at the extreme front of the ship feel the wave impact first. In rougher seas, you may hear the sound of the ship hull crashing against waves, or feel the bow thrusters loud and clear when docking early in the morning.
❌ Cabins Near Elevators & Launderettes
While being near an elevator bank sounds convenient, high-traffic corridors bring dinging elevator chimes, late-night conversations from passing guests, and heavy foot traffic right outside your door.
❌ Obstructed View Cabins
Some ocean view or balcony cabins are categorized as "Obstructed View" because lifeboats, maintenance gear, or structural pillars block part (or all) of your sightline. Always double-check deck plans carefully before securing a deal!

💡 Pro-Tip: Beware of "Guarantee" Cabins
When searching cruise rates, you will often see discounted "Guarantee Cabins" (where the cruise line assigns your specific room number closer to departure). While this option can save you money, you lose all control over cabin placement! The cruise line will assign whatever unbooked inventory remains—which often includes noisy, far-forward, or obstructed-view cabins.
