When you book an ocean cruise with Virgin Voyages, choosing your stateroom is one of the most exciting decisions you'll make. Unlike traditional cruise ships that feature dated decor and cramped layouts, Virgin’s cabins feel like modern boutique hotel rooms designed for high-tech comfort.

Over 86% of staterooms onboard Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and Brilliant Lady feature ocean-facing balconies. Virgin calls these balcony staterooms The Sea Terrace.

As a certified Travel Advisor and Virgin First Mate specialist, I’ve spent plenty of time relaxing in these rooms. Here is my complete, hands-on review of the Sea Terrace cabin—covering the hand-woven red hammock, room tech features, bathroom layout, and exact deck locations to pick (or avoid!).

  1. The Iconic Red Hammock Experience

Best spot to enjoy pristine ocean views

You cannot talk about Virgin Voyages without mentioning the hand-woven red balcony hammock!

Ethically hand-woven by rural artisans in Thailand through Yellow Leaf Hammocks, these red hammocks are fireproof, weather-safe, and arguably the single best feature of the balcony. Sitting on your terrace with a glass of wine, gently rocking while listening to the ship cut through open water, is absolute bliss.

Advisor Note: Standard hammocks support up to 330 lbs. They can be adjusted or hooked aside easily if you prefer full open space on your balcony.
  1. Room Tech & The Convertible Seabed

Set the mood in your cabin

Upon entering your cabin, you'll find an iPad tablet docked at the desk. With a single tap, you can:

  • Adjust the mood lighting (from bright "Get Ready" daylight to "Zen" or deep "Scarlet Night" red vibes).

  • Open or close the blackout curtains.

  • Order room service (ShipEats) directly to your door.

  • Stream movies on the large wall-mounted flat-screen TV.

Turn your Sea Terrace cabin into a swanky hang out spot

Virgin designed their staterooms with flexible living space in mind. During the day, your room steward can transform your queen bed into an L-shaped sofa, opening up room to stretch out or entertain friends before dinner.

  • Sleeping Comfort: While early reviews on Scarlet Lady noted the original mattress was on the firmer side, Virgin updated the mattress toppers across the fleet. The bed is cozy, plush, and ensures a great night's sleep at sea.

  1. Comparing Sea Terrace Categories: Standard vs. Central vs. XL

Virgin divides balcony staterooms into a few distinct tiers. Here is how they compare so you can choose the right option for your budget:

Stateroom Category

Sq. Footage (Interior + Terrace)

Key Feature

Best For...

Limited View Sea Terrace

~225 sq. ft. total

Partial view blocked by lifeboat equipment

Budget-conscious travelers wanting balcony breeze

The Sea Terrace

185 sq. ft. + 40 sq. ft. balcony

Located on forward and aft ends of decks 8–14

High value and classic Virgin experience

Central Sea Terrace

185 sq. ft. + 40 sq. ft. balcony

Mid-ship location on decks 8–14

Travelers prone to seasickness (smoothest ride!)

XL Sea Terrace

225 sq. ft. + 40 sq. ft. balcony

~30% larger layout with split bathroom setup

Travelers who want extra living space and dual vanities

The XL Sea Terrace Advantage

If budget allows, upgrading to an XL Sea Terrace gives you extra interior elbow room. The real highlight is the bathroom: instead of a single compact bathroom, XL units feature separate chambers—one dedicated to the toilet and sink, and a second dedicated to a large rainfall shower and double vanity.

  1. Location Guide: Which Deck to Book (And Which to Avoid)

Picking the right deck location on a cruise ship is critical for getting quality sleep.

🎯 The Best Decks to Pick:

  • Decks 10, 11, and 12 (Mid-Ship): These are the "sandwich decks"—meaning you have passenger cabins directly above and below you. They offer minimal foot traffic noise and a steady ride.

  • Central Sea Terrace (Decks 9–12): If you are sensitive to motion, being dead-center mid-ship lowers pitch and roll significantly.

⚠️ Locations to Reconsider or Watch Out For:

  • Deck 14 (Under Deck 15 Aquatic Club / Pool): Being on Deck 14 forward or mid-ship means you might hear sun loungers dragging across the pool deck early in the morning.

  • Deck 8 Aft (Above The Manor / Nightclub): Decks directly above late-night venues or high-volume lounges can experience bass vibration during late-night events like Scarlet Night.

For a deeper dive into mid-ship stability and avoiding high-traffic deck zones across all cruise lines, read my guide on How to Pick the Best Cabin Location on a Cruise Ship (And Which Ones to Avoid).
