As a Travel Advisor, I spend my days designing seamless, luxury vacations for my clients. But behind the scenes, people have asked me: "Which credit cards do you actually use for your own travel?"
Selecting the right travel credit card isn't about collecting as many cards as possible—it’s about strategy. The goal is to choose cards where the built-in perks, statement credits, and protections far outweigh the annual fee.
Here is an inside look at the exact credit cards currently in my wallet, ranked in order of my top personal choices, and how I maximize them.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® (My Top Overall Pick)
If I could only keep one travel card in my wallet, it would be the Chase Sapphire Preferred®. It delivers immense value relative to its low $95 annual fee.
Why It Pays for Itself: The card includes an annual $100 hotel credit for bookings made through Chase Travel. Applying that single $100 credit completely offsets the $95 annual fee, making the card virtually free to hold year after year!
The Major Airline Benefit: Chase Ultimate Rewards is the only major U.S. credit card rewards program that allows direct 1:1 point transfers to United Airlines MileagePlus. For frequent United flyers or Star Alliance travelers, this is a massive advantage.
Built-in Protection: It offers primary rental car collision damage coverage and solid trip delay reimbursement when charging travel to the card.
Advisor Insight on Points vs. Travel Planning: While earning points on credit cards is fantastic for booking flight yourself, redeeming points for complex itineraries, group trips, or luxury resort blocks can be tricky. I always recommend using card points for straightforward flight redemptions, and partnering with an advisor to curate your resort accommodations, transfers, and exclusive VIP amenities!(Curious how advisor booking works? Capital One Venture X (The Premium Value Winner)
The Capital One Venture X carries a $395 annual fee, but like the Sapphire Preferred, it easily pays for itself when used properly.
Why It Pays for Itself: Each account anniversary year, cardholders receive a $300 Capital One Travel credit plus 10,000 anniversary bonus miles (worth $100 toward travel). Combined, that is $400 in direct travel value for a $395 fee.
VIP Perks Included: You gain complimentary access to Capital One Lounges and over 1,300 Priority Pass airport lounges worldwide, making travel days significantly more comfortable.
Everyday Earning: It earns a flat 2x miles on every single purchase, making it an easy option for non-category spending.
American Express Platinum® (Best for the Frequent/Serious Traveler)
The American Express Platinum® is a heavy-hitter with a premium annual fee (currently $895). I only recommend this card to serious travelers who can consistently use its perks to offset the upfront cost.
Elite Lounge Access: Access to the premier Centurion Lounge network, Plaza Premium lounges, and Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta).
Statement Credits: When fully utilized—such as airline fee credits, hotel credits, Uber Cash, and digital entertainment credits—the value quickly passes the annual fee.
Who It Is For: If you travel internationally multiple times a year and value airport comfort, this card is worth every penny. If you only travel once a year, the lower-fee cards above are a better fit.
A Note on Credit Card Protection vs. Dedicated Travel Insurance
While premium credit cards offer great baseline travel delay and cancellation perks, relying solely on credit card coverage during a major emergency is a common risk.
Credit card benefits typically have strict coverage caps, do not cover pre-existing conditions, and provide minimal international emergency medical care or evacuation limits.
